Exercise Singapan 2026

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) concluded Exercise Singapan, a bilateral naval exercise, on 29 August 2026. The exercise was held from 27 to 28 August 2026 in waters off Japan in the Pacific Ocean. Singapore participated with the Formidable-class frigate RSS Steadfast; Japan participated with the Asagiri-class destroyer JS Hamagiri and Akizuki-class destroyer JS Teruzuki (MINDEF, 29 August 2026).

Exercise activities

The two navies exchanged sea riders and conducted conventional-warfare serials, including gunnery firings, communication exercises and manoeuvring serials. Personnel also took part in exercise planning and ship visits ashore. The opening ceremony was co-officiated at Yokosuka Naval Base on 27 August 2026 by the Commander First Flotilla, Colonel Carlin Song, and the Commander Surface Warfare Squadron Nine, Captain Iwade Yohei (MINDEF, 29 August 2026).

The exercise was a bilateral training activity between the RSN and JMSDF. The Ministry of Defence release presents it as part of an established relationship involving professional exchanges, exercises and ship visits; it does not announce a new treaty, basing arrangement, mutual-defence obligation or permanent deployment. Exercise serials should therefore be read as training activities and interoperability practice, not as evidence that Singapore or Japan entered a new alliance through Singapan (MINDEF, 29 August 2026).

Related Singapore–Japan naval engagement

Before the exercise, RSS Steadfast hosted Navy@Tokyo from 21 to 22 August 2026. That port engagement preceded Singapan and is not the same event as the exercise itself. The distinction matters when counting activities, dates or participating forces: the MINDEF release describes Navy@Tokyo as a preceding engagement and Singapan as the subsequent bilateral naval exercise (MINDEF, 29 August 2026).
