Agglomerated Stone Tiling
BCA's Good Industry Practices guide for agglomerated stone tiling explains material selection, installation, finishing, protection and maintenance for a manufactured stone product used in Singapore construction.
Agglomerated Stone Tiling
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) publishes Agglomerated Stone Tiling as a Good Industry Practices guide in its construction-quality resources. Agglomerated stone is a manufactured product rather than a single natural quarry material; the guide addresses how its material characteristics affect design, installation, protection and maintenance in building work (BCA Agglomerated Stone Tiling guide, accessed 2 September 2026).
Material and system decisions
The guide treats the finish as a system of substrate, adhesive, stone and surface treatment. Product selection should therefore consider the intended location, traffic, exposure, appearance and compatibility with the supporting build-up. BCA notes that agglomerated marble can be harder and less porous than many natural marbles, but it can still be vulnerable to scratching in heavy-traffic conditions; the material is not automatically suitable for every use merely because it is an engineered product (BCA Agglomerated Stone Tiling guide, accessed 2 September 2026).
Installation and protection
Good results depend on a sound substrate, suitable adhesive, correct laying and joint treatment, and protection while other trades continue work. The guide discusses preparation, laying, grouting and finishing, and highlights that protection is necessary to prevent construction damage. It also describes an impregnator as a subsurface treatment that can improve resistance to stain ingress when the product and application are compatible; this is not a universal substitute for correct detailing or cleaning (BCA Agglomerated Stone Tiling guide, accessed 2 September 2026).
Quality and maintenance boundary
Inspection should cover the substrate, materials, installation, appearance, protection and handover care. Maintenance choices should reflect the stone composition, surface finish, traffic and cleaning products; aggressive treatment can damage a finish even where the original installation was sound. The guide is a BCA good-practice publication, not a statutory code or a project-specific specification. Current contracts, applicable standards, manufacturer's instructions, building-control requirements and professional advice remain controlling (BCA Guidebooks and Publications, accessed 2 September 2026).
