Singapore's AI-for-Science initiative

Singapore's AI-for-Science initiative funds interdisciplinary collaborations that develop and apply AI methods and tools to scientific research and discovery, with a stated S$120 million investment under RIE2025.

Singapore's AI-for-Science initiative

Singapore's AI-for-Science (AI4S) initiative is a national research programme that develops and applies AI methods and tools to scientific research and discovery. MDDI announced a new S$120 million investment on 1 October 2024, led by the National Research Foundation (NRF), to support deep collaborations between AI researchers and scientific domain experts (MDDI, 1 October 2024). AI4S is about using AI to improve scientific productivity, model complex systems, design experiments and discover new knowledge. It is therefore distinct from the “science of AI,” which develops AI methods as an object of study, and from applied AI programmes that deploy existing AI to improve a business or public-service workflow.

Research purpose and domains

AI4S supports methods and tools that can transfer across multiple scientific domains, while also allowing proposals in themes important to Singapore. The launch announcement identifies advanced materials research and biomedical and health sciences as examples, and says that bottom-up proposals from the research community may also be considered (MDDI, 1 October 2024). The initiative can cover work such as AI-assisted modelling, simulation, data analysis, hypothesis generation and experimental design, but a project must retain a substantive scientific research question; simply using a commercial AI tool for routine administration is not the same thing. The goal is to bring AI and domain expertise together so that methods developed for one area can improve research capability in others.

Interdisciplinary teams, data and compute

AI4S is designed around collaboration between AI researchers and scientists in other fields. The programme description includes support for a new generation of researchers who are “bilingual” across AI and one or more scientific domains, together with access to relevant datasets and compute resources, researcher collocation, and international collaboration where Singapore has capability gaps (MDDI, 1 October 2024). This means the initiative is not just a grant line for model training: it also addresses talent, data access, computing infrastructure, research translation and collaboration design. Projects involving sensitive biomedical or personal data still require the applicable ethics, privacy, security and research-governance controls.

Grant structure and dated call context

The NRF AI4S programme identifies two grant categories: a Challenge Grant Scheme and a Catalytic Grant Scheme (NRF AI4S programme, accessed Aug 2026). The published 2025 Catalytic Grant Call described support of up to S$2 million for two- to three-year projects and sought collaborative teams of AI and scientific-domain researchers (NRF Catalytic Grant Call, updated 29 March 2026). That call had a stated closing date of 14 October 2025, so its terms should not be treated as a live open application window. The S$120 million figure is the initiative-level investment, not a guaranteed quantum for each proposal, AI startup or university department.

Eight inaugural projects and relationship to Singapore's AI system

NRF announced eight inaugural AI4S projects on 16 June 2026 under the S$120 million national programme, bringing together AI researchers and scientific domain experts from Singapore and international institutions to accelerate scientific discovery (NRF, 16 June 2026). These projects sit within the wider National AI Strategy and RIE system, but AI4S should not be collapsed into the National AI Research and Development Plan, the National AI Impact Programme, or AI governance guidance. National AI strategy and governance covers national direction, research-and-adoption layers and governance frameworks; AI4S covers a particular scientific-research mission and its interdisciplinary funding instruments. Current calls, participating institutions and project lists should be checked against the NRF AI4S programme page as they change.
