Biological Data Centre Prototype in Singapore 2026
Prototype and partners
NUS Medicine, Singapore-headquartered data-centre developer and operator DayOne, and Melbourne-based biological-computing company Cortical Labs established a Biological Data Centre prototype at the NUS Life Sciences Institute. NUS Medicine said the prototype was showcased on 6 August 2026 and publicly described on 17 August 2026. (NUS Medicine, 17 August 2026, accessed 5 September 2026.)
Biological computing approach
The prototype combines Cortical Labs CL1/Cortical Cloud computing units with microelectrode-array integration and living biological neurons derived from stem cells. NUS Medicine describes this as “wetware” computing: biological neurons are used alongside engineered infrastructure to process information and support AI-related research. The reported concept is an experimental computing approach, not a replacement for Singapore's conventional data centres or a claim that biological computing has already achieved commercial-scale deployment. (NUS Medicine, 17 August 2026, accessed 5 September 2026.)
Research and scaling boundary
The deployed system comprises a 20-unit CL1 biological-computing system operated in a live NUS Medicine research environment. The partners said the work could support research into learning and adaptation, drug discovery and neurological disease, while exploring lower-power pathways for some AI workloads. NUS Medicine characterised the prototype as a step toward a possible first large-scale Biological Data Centre in Singapore and the first of its kind outside Australia; that ambition is not evidence that a large-scale facility has already been completed. (NUS Medicine, 17 August 2026, accessed 5 September 2026.)
