Va'a Association Singapore

The Va'a Association Singapore (VAS) is Singapore's national association for va'a, also known as outrigger canoeing or waka ama. VAS describes itself as governing the sport nationally and supporting athlete development, races and international representation (VAS, About Va'a, accessed 29 August 2026). The association represents five clubs: American Dragons Singapore, AustCham Paddle Club Singapore, Kiwi Waka Ama Singapore, Singapore Paddle Club and Va'a Team France Singapore (VAS, About Va'a, accessed 29 August 2026). Club membership and event participation are distinct from being an association office-holder or from representing Singapore internationally.

Sport development and inclusion

VAS's published mission emphasises growth, community, education and inclusion. Its activities include local training and racing, coaching and steer-certification opportunities, youth development and participation for people from different backgrounds and abilities (VAS, Va'a Singapore Association, accessed 29 August 2026). The association's public description also places local paddling in both community and competitive settings, with training in sea and flat-water locations and events that connect Singapore's clubs with wider regional and international participation. These descriptions indicate the association's development role; they do not establish a universal public training entitlement or a government-funded programme. The published mission is an organisational statement, not a national sports-funding guarantee.

Events and international representation

VAS organises and supports races and selection pathways, including the Singapore events associated with the International Va'a Federation (IVF) World Sprint Championships 2026. The official event site identifies VAS as the association behind the Singapore championship site and lists VAS contact details (Singapore IVF Va'a World Sprints 2026, accessed 29 August 2026). The world championships are a specific international event covered by ivf world sprint championships singapore 2026; this article describes VAS's continuing association role and should not be read as a claim that every VAS member competes at world-championship level. Competition hosting, club membership and national representation are related but separate functions.
