Singapore Citizenship Journey
Singapore's Citizenship Journey is a mandatory integration programme for citizenship applicants aged 16 to 60 who have received in-principle approval, with online learning, experiential learning and community sharing before citizenship formalities.
Singapore Citizenship Journey
The Singapore Citizenship Journey (SCJ) is a mandatory integration programme for Singapore citizenship applicants aged 16 to 60 who have received in-principle approval. ICA places it between in-principle approval and completion of citizenship formalities; it is therefore a post-approval requirement for the covered age group, not a citizenship-eligibility test or an approval guarantee (ICA, accessed 5 September 2026; ICA Citizenship Roadmap, accessed 5 September 2026).
Components
The programme has three components. First, an online e-learning module with quiz components covers Singapore's history, key institutions and systems, citizenship responsibilities, shared values and social norms. Second, an experiential learning programme takes participants to significant historical landmarks and national institutions, or offers a half-day introduction to community service in Singapore. Third, a Community Sharing Session lets local community leaders share experiences of living in a multiracial and multireligious society and encourage community involvement (MHA, 7 July 2026).
Timing and process
After in-principle approval, the ICA roadmap directs an applicant in the covered age group to log in to the SC Journey Portal, complete the e-Journey, and secure slots for the Experiential Visit and Community Sharing Session. The roadmap gives an estimated two months for this stage, while noting that the applicant must complete the journey before moving through the later citizenship-registration and formalities steps (ICA Citizenship Roadmap, accessed 20 August 2026).
What the programme is not
MHA's page, updated 4 September 2026, states that there is presently no prescribed assessment of a citizenship applicant's knowledge of Singapore or English proficiency. The SCJ is instead a mandatory orientation and community-integration programme for eligible applicants after in-principle approval. It is distinct from the Permanent Resident Journey, which is an MCCY integration programme for new PRs and does not satisfy the SCJ requirement (MHA, updated 4 September 2026; MCCY, 7 July 2026).
