SLEC CommCare Academy

The SLEC CommCare Academy is a community-care workforce training facility operated by St Luke’s ElderCare (SLEC). It was officially opened at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability on 29 June 2026. The Academy is intended to build practical capability for community-care workers and future workers; it is not a hospital, a healthcare regulator or a cash-benefit scheme (MOH, 29 June 2026).

Training role and announced reach

The SLEC CommCare Academy's three-year target should be read together with St Luke’s ElderCare's wider workforce role. At the 29 June 2026 opening, the Ministry of Health said SLEC had served more than 28,000 seniors islandwide and trained more than 5,000 healthcare workers in areas including dementia care, rehabilitation care, wound care and active ageing. Those figures describe SLEC's broader organisational experience as stated at the opening; they are not a current Academy enrolment count, a count of Academy graduates or a measure of guaranteed employment (MOH, 29 June 2026).

The Academy is expected to train over 3,000 individuals in the three years from its launch. This is a forward-looking aggregate reach target from the 29 June 2026 opening, not proof that 3,000 people have completed training, a target for one course or a guarantee of admission for every applicant. The Academy's role is to build skills and confidence for current and future community-care workers as care becomes more integrated and multidisciplinary (MOH, 29 June 2026).

The Academy supports the Integrated Community Care Provider Model (ICCP) through training in the international Resident Assessment tool, or interRAI. MOH describes interRAI as helping care teams identify seniors' needs early, develop coordinated care plans and share information across providers. This makes the Academy relevant to coordinated community care, but it does not make the Academy a clinical service provider or make an interRAI course a professional-registration route (MOH, 29 June 2026).

The Academy is expected to train over 3,000 individuals in the three years from its launch, an announced forward-looking reach target rather than a count of people already trained or a guarantee of admission for every applicant (MOH, 29 June 2026). Its training supports community-care workers, including through the Integrated Community Care Provider Model and training in the international Resident Assessment tool (interRAI). The Academy also conducts the WSQ Advanced Certificate in Healthcare (Community Care) for support-care staff taking on redesigned community-care roles.

Relationship to Singapore’s care system

SLEC has been an appointed learning institute under the Agency for Integrated Care since 2018. The Academy supports the broader community-care workforce rather than replacing MOH, AIC, healthcare clusters or professional regulators. Its LifeLab™ @ SLEC uses geriatric simulation suits and virtual-reality tools to help students experience physical, emotional and social challenges associated with ageing; student placements and internships provide practical exposure (MOH, 29 June 2026).

MOH also referred to an upcoming senior care centre at Temasek Polytechnic established in collaboration with SLEC as an example of bridging classroom learning and practice. That announcement gives the Academy a workforce-development and sector-partnership role, but it does not establish that every student will receive a placement, that a placement guarantees a job, or that the Temasek Polytechnic centre is included in the Academy's 3,000-person target. These are learning and career-exposure activities, not clinical treatment or a healthcare licence (MOH, 29 June 2026).

Evidence and application boundary

The available MOH opening speech supports describing the SLEC CommCare Academy's opening date, workforce purpose, announced reach, training examples and learning facilities. It does not state public course fees, intake dates, a complete eligibility rule, a guaranteed number of placements or the percentage of trainees who will enter community-care employment. A user seeking current application advice should therefore verify operational details with SLEC or the relevant programme administrator rather than treating the 3,000-person target as an entitlement (MOH, 29 June 2026).

SLEC has been an appointed learning institute under the Agency for Integrated Care since 2018, and the Academy supports the broader community-care workforce rather than replacing MOH, AIC, healthcare clusters or professional regulators. Its LifeLab™ @ SLEC uses geriatric simulation suits and virtual-reality tools to help students understand ageing-related challenges, while placements and internships provide practical exposure; these are learning activities, not clinical treatment or a promise of employment (MOH, 29 June 2026).
