PIER71 Smart Port Challenge
MPA and NUS Enterprise's PIER71 Smart Port Challenge connects maritime start-ups with challenge statements, industry partners, acceleration, mentors and investors; the 2026 tenth edition adds MIR+ and Venture2Capital.
PIER71 Smart Port Challenge
The PIER71 Smart Port Challenge (SPC) is a maritime start-up innovation platform jointly launched by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and NUS Enterprise. The tenth edition, launched on 22 April 2026 during Singapore Maritime Week, expands the challenge beyond early-stage discovery toward commercialisation, market entry, fundraising and deployment of maritime solutions (MPA, 10th Smart Port Challenge; NUS Enterprise, 10th Smart Port Challenge).
SPC2026 challenge and acceleration route
The 2026 edition presents innovation opportunities across four areas: Next-Generation Port, Smart Shipping, Maritime Green Technologies and Digitalisation. Shortlisted start-ups enter a 10-week SPC Accelerate programme with tailored mentorship, workshops and opportunities for market validation. The 2026 call accepted applications through 15 June 2026, so that application window was closed at the 19 August 2026 verification date (MPA, 10th Smart Port Challenge).
SPC is not a generic technology grant application. Start-ups respond to maritime challenge statements and work with innovation partners and sector stakeholders; selection, programme participation and any later funding or prize are separate decisions. The 2026 release says cash prizes would be awarded at the Grand Finale on 11 November 2026, but does not make every shortlisted start-up a prize recipient (MPA, 10th Smart Port Challenge). Participation and historical reach are not automatic funding for every start-up.
New scale-up support in the tenth edition
The 2026 edition introduces Mentors-in-Residence Plus (MIR+), pairing start-ups seeking scale with experienced maritime professionals and overseas accelerator partners to support market entry and expansion. It also introduces Venture2Capital, which connects start-ups with investors and provides structured fundraising training and support. These are ecosystem and commercialisation pathways, not promises of investment or overseas market access for every participant (MPA, 10th Smart Port Challenge; NUS Enterprise, 10th Smart Port Challenge).
MPA and NUS Enterprise reported that PIER71 had supported approximately 170 start-ups since 2018, which had collectively raised more than S$150 million by 22 April 2026. Those are cumulative historical programme figures, not SPC2026 selection targets or government funding paid to each start-up. The same release says MPA's MINT Fund may be a later route for proof-of-concept, pilot projects and product development; SPC participation does not itself equal MINT approval (MPA, 10th Smart Port Challenge).
The stages should therefore be read as a progression with separate decisions. A challenge statement and the SPC Accelerate programme help a selected start-up validate a maritime solution with partners; MIR+ and Venture2Capital add mentoring, market-entry and fundraising support; and MINT may later support eligible proof-of-concept, pilot or product-development work. None of these descriptions turns the historical S$150 million into a common pool payable to every participant, or makes a start-up's participation proof that a port operator has adopted its product. Operational deployment, investment and grant support each require their own counterparties, criteria and evidence (MPA, 10th Smart Port Challenge; NUS Enterprise, 10th Smart Port Challenge).
