Digital for Life

Singapore's Digital for Life (DfL) is a national movement that strengthens digital inclusion so that people can enjoy the benefits of technology. The movement brings together corporates, community groups, government and individuals to promote digital adoption and improve digital literacy and skills (IMDA, accessed 30 August 2026). DfL is a movement and partnership framework, not a single device-distribution scheme, training course or statutory entitlement.

Launch and institutional role

The Digital for Life movement was launched on 8 February 2021 to galvanise public, private and community participation in building a digitally inclusive Singapore (Digital for Life, accessed 10 September 2026; IMDA, accessed 30 August 2026). IMDA oversees the movement and publishes its national framing, partner route and related digital-inclusion resources (Digital for Life, accessed 10 September 2026). The current portal presents several ways to participate, including guided learning journeys, events and self-learning resources, starting a project, volunteering and donating; those routes illustrate a movement ecosystem rather than a single service (Digital for Life official portal, accessed 10 September 2026). The movement's practical work can therefore be delivered by different partners and may address different groups or digital-use problems; a DfL label does not by itself identify one uniform service or eligibility rule.

What the movement covers

Digital for Life covers two linked areas: digital literacy and adoption, and future readiness. Its official description includes helping different segments of society use technology in daily life and increasing knowledge of emerging technologies, including generative artificial intelligence, so people can use them meaningfully while understanding associated risks (IMDA, accessed 30 August 2026). The movement's audience is broad rather than restricted to one age group. IMDA highlights seniors' essential digital tasks, youths' skills and volunteering opportunities, and parents' role in safer and kinder online use; the specific support available depends on the relevant DfL initiative or partner (IMDA, accessed 30 August 2026).

Fund and participation boundary

The Digital for Life movement is supported by a flagship Digital for Life Fund that empowers community partners, companies, non-profit organisations and individuals to propose or lead projects contributing to digital inclusion, literacy and wellness (Digital for Life, accessed 30 August 2026). This partner and project model means that participation may involve learning, volunteering, contributing ideas, providing resources or delivering a community project; it does not mean that every person receives funding, and DfL is not a guaranteed grant or a uniform application process for every activity. The official portal directs people to digital-learning resources and to routes for starting or supporting a project (Digital for Life, accessed 30 August 2026).

Dated movement reach

In an IMDA release dated 5 July 2024, the movement reported more than 300 public, people and private-sector partners and more than 400,000 beneficiaries reached through ground-up projects since launch. The reported beneficiary scope included access to digital connectivity, learning digital skills and exposure to emerging technology (IMDA, 5 July 2024). These are cumulative movement figures as reported on that date, not current-year totals, a unique-person audit or an entitlement for every Singapore resident. The portal’s current menu of learning, contribution and project routes does not by itself update or replace that historical reach figure; a later total would need a separately dated IMDA or Digital for Life report.

Distinction from other digital programmes

Digital for Life is broader than a particular government digital-service feedback channel. Smart Nation lists IMDA's DfL movement separately from GovTech's Tech Kaki community, OGP's Open Jio Programme and OGP's Build for Good initiative (Smart Nation Singapore, accessed 30 August 2026). Tech Kaki and Open Jio focus on user research and testing of digital products, while Build for Good focuses on civic-technology projects; DfL instead provides a national digital-inclusion movement and partner framework. DfL should also not be read as a guarantee of a device, broadband subsidy, course place or individual grant: those conditions belong to the named scheme or project delivering the support.
